For a long time, the reputation of a Data Center was limited to the sole criterion of continuity of service; now new features have gained importance, such as energy consumption, environmental performance and even information system security.
In this same sense, for companies that invest in this type of project it is vital to ensure that the facilities provide the level of IT performance and reliability in accordance with the business objective. Even if availability, data security and the quality of services offered are essential, companies must ensure return on investment.
That's why we're proud to inform all of our clients that KIO Networks has become the first company in the world to achieve Level 6 certification in its Data Centers by the International Computer Room Experts Association (ICREA), an international association regulating the design, construction, maintenance, supervision and commissioning of the infrastructure for data processing centers.
Level 6 is the highest rating given by this association, awarded to organizations with at least three interconnected Data Centers—rated at least Level 3—and with ICREA certification. This allows that, in the event of a major incident or failure of one or two Data Centers, the other or the other two can meet the needs of users without suspending service.
"At KIO Networks we are very proud to be the pioneers in the world by obtaining this certification from such an important authority as ICREA. This achievement represents not only the robustness of our infrastructures, but the great talent and high technical capabilities of our employees who, under the leadership of Miguel Ramos, Director of Data Center Operations, and Alfonso Cueto, Director of Managed Services Operations, work collaboratively to generate added value focused on delivering the highest quality to our clients and, thus, strengthen the digital ecosystem in the regions where we participate," said Santiago Suinaga, Managing Director of KIO Data Centers.
Some of the requirements that Data Centers must meet to reach this certification, in addition to the interconnection between them, are:
- Five access controls to enter the Data Center and communications equipment area
- Fire protection systems—including early detection and automated suppression
- CCTV Monitoring or Video Surveillance System and an autonomous and redundant electric power generation system
- Precision cooling elements
- Redundant uninterrupted power distribution
- Communications that allow the highest level of availability
"Our Data Centers are interconnected with each other, allowing us to continue to offer 99.99% availability to our clients, with geographically distributed redundancy options to host primary, secondary and backup sites; in this way we can provide maximum resilience in the face of any situation that arises, even the most extreme, such as the earthquakes and hurricanes that have recently affected various areas of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, as well as in the challenges that arose during the pandemic," said Suinaga.
To put it in perspective, with an ICREA Level 1, companies are entitled to be down 18.25 days per year without any penalty for their service provider. With a Level 6, a company is only allowed to be down for 31.5 seconds.
If we add to this that KIO Networks has the largest business interconnection ecosystem in the country—which includes the most important network, content and digital media providers, as well as organizations of all sectors, Cloud and IT service providers—and that today more than 2,000 companies trust us, this certification is a sign that under our name such a structured digital habitat has been established, which allows the definition of complete industries.
"The experience gained over the last two decades has taught us that it is not the strongest species that survive, but those who respond best to change," concluded Santiago Suinaga.
